Nungwi by Sea: Dolphins at Mnemba, Sea Turtles and Sunset Dhows

2 min read

The north of Zanzibar is surrounded by some of the clearest water in East Africa. From Nungwi and Kendwa, the best marine adventures are only a short boat ride away. Here is how to enjoy them.

Mnemba Atoll: dolphins and coral

Mnemba is a protected marine area off the north-east coast. In the morning, our boat looks for wild dolphins. We never chase them: we watch quietly, and if the moment is right you can slip into the water near them. Then it is time to snorkel over the coral reef, full of colourful fish, turtles and starfish, before relaxing on the white sandbank.

  • Shared boat: departure 8:00, snorkelling gear, fruit and water included, US$40 per person.

  • Private boat: departure 9:00, only your group, plus a seafood barbecue on a beach near Mnemba, US$80 per person.

Swimming with sea turtles

In Nungwi, a natural lagoon connected to the sea is home to green turtles. You feed them seaweed, swim next to them and take beautiful photos. A gentle activity, perfect for children.

Sunset on the water

Two ways to end the day: the BoomBoom Boat, with music, dancing and a swim stop in the open sea, or our private sunset dhow, a traditional wooden boat just for you, with a romantic dinner option.

Up in the air and fast on the water

For more adrenaline, try parasailing over Nungwi and Kendwa, or a jetski ride filmed by our drone. Prefer something calm? The transparent kayak lets you see the sea life under your feet.

Good to know

  • Use reef-safe sun cream and never touch the coral.

  • Mornings usually have the calmest sea.

  • Bring a towel, swimsuit and a waterproof bag for your phone.
